Paint, Collage and Abstraction

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

 

In this workshop we will explore the stages of abstraction via guided drawing, collage and painting exercises.  We will look at and discuss relevant paintings and produce a series of colourful abstracted collages and painted studies.  These may lead to a finished painting which may be developed further during weekly classes or at home.

 

During the day we will explore the language of painting in a non-representational way in order to release us from “having to get it right”.  So this is a good workshop for exploring the language of painting and enjoying the materials, even if you are a representational painter.

Examples of this language include: Colour, texture, marks, form, line, repetition, scale, rhythm, surface, tone.

 

MORNING

 

• Guided charcoal or ink drawings from vessels

• Hand paint swatches for collage

• Look at and discuss relevant artists

• Make guided collage studies

• Add to them with paint and line

 

AFTERNOON

 

Based on the morning’s studies you will be shown how to develop these into a larger painting. 

 

SUITABLE FOR ALL LEVELS OF ABILITY

 

You will need to bring your own materials although there will be lining paper and some paint to borrow.  Bamboo pens and charcoal is provided.

 

MATERIALS TO BRING

 

• Two vessels from home that are easy to carry

• A roll of lining paper if you have it (heavier the better)

• Paint in Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, White (If you are bringing oils, please bring some oil painting surfaces to work on such as primed lining paper or a pad of oil painting paper).  

• Brushes - a range of small and large

• Charcoal if you have some

• Ink if you have some

• A stick of glue

• Scissors

• Palette

Suzy is an experienced and fully qualified Adult Learning tutor having taught Drawing and Painting for Devon County Council for many years. She now runs her own painting classes at Arthouse in South Brent.
